Building Simplicity - 11/11/2008

June 12, 2011
I am sometimes asked how I do what I do. This isn't a question easily answered in words. So I thought that I might share a little bit of the madness with you. This is how I went about completing the poster art for Simplicity, one of the main characters for 'Full Circle.' I used photoshop CS3 and a WACOM Graphire (which I am sure wants a break after dealing with me so often). This piece took me about 14 hours total to complete. Hopefully, the results are worth the time. Please feel free to tell me what you think...

I always start out with a rough sketch in blue. Why blue? Why not?

The first thing I color is the skin, always. I color on a new layer in Multiply, so I can still see the lines underneath.

Next, I usually do the bulk of the clothing. In this case, a dress and sandals.

Now I do her hair. I rarely ever sketch the hair out exactly the way I want it for some reason. So I kinda create it here in this step as I see fit.

At this stage, I add design elements to the clothing and build the nearest background elements, to make sure the image still has balance. Or at least, that's what I tell myself.

Now, I'm making the executive decision to simplify my life and spare you the boring details of building walls on a computer. At this stage I build the rest of the background from nearest to farthest, and add any tiny details I missed before. Drop in the logo, sign my name, throw a tat on her foot and voila! Finished! Tired as hell and want to sleep for weeks.

Well, if you made it through all of that, thanks for spending time with me. Let me know what you think. If you didn't make it through it, I don't blame you. Once again, I would like to thank my homegirl, Sasha, in Florida, (who will probably never even see this blog) for letting me use her nickname to complete this character. Please feel free to leave any comment, critiques or questions you feel like. Thanks again for visiting.

Full Circle... so it begins (Excerpt) - 11/10/2008

June 12, 2011

***This is just an excerpt from the original blog post, so long ago. I would post the whole thing, but I learned some valuable lessons since then... the main one is, people who are not artists don't understand artists. And when we write about things that affect or inspired our art, our words can be taken personally in ways that just don't make any sense to us. So please forgive... I'm skipping the personal part of the blog so I don't have to have a long conversation about it later. I hope yo...

Taking Myself Seriously - 08/02/2008

June 12, 2011

I recently came to the morbid realization that from the moment of my birth, I began to die. Having that thought didn't really make me sad or anything, but it did put some things into perspective.

Thus armed with a new epiphany, I decided I was going to take myself a little more seriously... which basically means, I'm going to work harder on making my dream come true. In the end, I want to leave something behind so that the world knows that I was here... not that this fact is a big deal or anyt...
